The buffalo weaver is known for being part of the “Little five”, but do you really know anything about this common bird?
There are three species of buffalo weaver but visitors to South Africa will only spot the Red-billed Buffalo Weaver. These birds are easy to spot and are very vocal – especially when they are seen in their noisy colonies. The Red-billed Buffalo Weaver is bigamous; meaning that they take on more than one mate. You will see them feeding on insects, fruits and seeds. They measure in at 23 cm and weigh about 80 grams.
This little black bird might be common to South Africa but it is close to all our hearts.
